Most fly fishermen dream of a home on a famous river or lake, where they can step out their back door after dinner and be in walking distance to a late evening caddis fly hatch. Well, lets just say I kinda had a little of that without the famous part. I grew up on a dairy farm in Central, Utah. Our families fields bordered Utah Lake, so in a way my backyard was Utah Lake. I spent 1000s of hours exploring, building huts, fishing, hunting and living my childhood on the shores of Utah Lake. Now fast forward 30 yrs. Its Saturday afternoon and the warm February weather is temping me to do anything other than sit around and do honey-do projects all day. I had had it, I had 2 hours of light and I had to get out! Having fished or explored every inch of Utah Lake, I knew The Marsh was the spot to be. Loaded the boat and on the drive out had my teenage brother and his buddy, ask if they could tag along. The target was Bluegill and Largemouths, but was pleasantly surprised that the White Bass were in. The fishing was fast and so was the catching. We stripped dark streamers in hopes of landing a big LM or Carp, but the school of White Bass were aggressive and wanted everything we threw. (They get that way) It wasn’t an all day trip, but it was exactly what was needed. A couple hours teaching the next generation the traditions of our forefathers. There’s something special about fishing a home water. It doesn’t have to be good or bad, you just need to spend time there. It might not be a famous river like the South Fork or Henrys Lake, but living on Utah Lake is my dream home and it can have some of the best fishing for 10 different warm water fish in the state. (Largemouth Bass, White Bass, Walleye, Bluegill, Perch, Sunfish, Catfish, Bullhead, Suckers and Carp) Plus its just a walk out the back door. So get out, explore and find your own home water…
