Utah Green River Brown Trout

As mentioned before this years incredibly dry and warm winter has given Utah fly fishers many opportunities to enjoy rivers and streams that are usually locked up in deep snow and ice. So don’t miss out on one of the best fly fishing winters Utah has ever had! So go explore Utah’s bounty of small streams and you might just find a new favorite fly fishing spot. This weeks weather looks great again. Today we hit 45 degrees and its Feb 1st!  This weeks focus is on streamer fishing rivers, since the weather will be overcast and above freezing almost all week its a prefect time to bust out the 6 wt and sink tip and go after a bruiser. Here are the top picks:

1. Green River- Its one of the best under-utalized winter spots in the state and maybe the country. The green fishes amazing during the winter months and you usually will only see a couple people on the weekends. Streamers fish great on the green during the winter, browns are just getting off their spawn and hunting for a big meal to replenish their lost fat source. The old standby for the green is a ginger bugger,(goldielocks is very popular as well) but don’t leave home without some black sex dungeons, olive circus peanuts, and any other streamers you might have up your sleeve. One of the keys to success is having the finding the right color and movement. Some days are black & slow retrieves and other are fast & ginger. Really let the fish show you what they want. Switching to find the color of the day is important.

2. Weber River- Thee words. Yellow or Olive?  For some reason on the Weber these two colors do the trick 99% of the time. Flies like the circus peanut, provo river hooker, zoo cougar have had great success on some of the Webs over-sized browns. Cover a lot of water and really get your flies in the fishiest places possible, cause you need to drawn those big boys out of their safe lair. Don’t be worried about losing a couple $5 flies its all part of the streamer game if you want to have success.

3. Diamond Fork River- Like on the Weber, brighter flies seem to really do the trick. Cover a lot of water and don’t fish too fast. Really try and go deep and slow during the winter on the DF.

4. Blacksmith Fork River- Its a winter sleeper, but if you hit it just right. It is a great little stream to throw smaller streamers with BIG results. Try smaller woolly buggers in ginger, black, olive and white. Some will trial a bugger with a zebra midge and dead drift it through some of the deeper holes.

5. Strawberry River-Pinnacles Area- Below Soldier Creek dam lies 18 miles of what some call the Wild Strawberry River. This section does’t hold huge fish, but its got lots of brown trout that range from 12-15iches. Smaller streamers mentioned above work, but stealth and good cast are more important than the fly. These fish are very wild and spooky, so you need to spend most of the day on your knees if you want to have a chance.
