Weekend Fishing Report 1/25

Winter Fly Fishing on the Middle Provo RiverThis years mild dry winter has given Utah fly fishers many opportunities to enjoy rivers and streams that are usually locked up in deep snow and ice. So go explore Utah’s bounty of small streams and you might just find a new favorite fly fishing season. This weeks weather looks great again. Today we hit 50 degrees and its January 25!  Midges are the focus of this weeks picks. So here are the best places to get out and enjoy some great top water Midge fishing.

1. Green River- After hearing report after report about the amazing midge fishing the Green is experiencing this winter. I had to get out there and try it myself. I am spending the next couple days on the river. So I’ll let you know how we do. Hatch starts around noon and ends at 2 or 3pm. Fish the back eddies and other slow water runs and you will find rising fish. Little hole area is a great place to find a hatch since it receives the most sun light. Use light tippet and small midge clusters like griffith gnats or orange asher.

2. Odgen River- Continues to produce great winter midge fishing. Move until you find a pod of rising fish. Use stealth once you locate risers. Long light leaders and tippet will produce more fish. Astro Midge, Brooks Sprout, and Midge Clusters will work. Size down if the fish are rejecting your fly.

3. Middle Provo River- Great Fishing below Jordanelle Dam, but also lots of anglers. Try some place new on the Middle and you won’t be disappointed. This river is full of fish and you might find a new favorite area. Midges mentioned above will work. Smaller the better for picky fish.

4. Weber River- Even though its not as popular for Midge fishing. The Weber is a great place to target some big noses in the winter. Midge fishing can be great on the Weber, so don’t over look it and head to the Middle.

5. Lower Provo River- Since the LPR runs down a narrow canyon and doesn’t see much light in the winter. The KEY to a successful day of Midge fishing is to find where the sun hits the water early. One hint try the island area by hoovers hole. The LP is an amazing midge river and winter time see’s fewer anglers than the MP.
